A unique trail run in the Westhoek

What?

May 18, 2024 marks the launch of the first-ever Belgian Front Memorial Trail, a special event that combines trail running with an in-depth historical experience in the beautiful Westhoek region. This new initiative is designed to appeal to both sports enthusiasts and history buffs.

The project was chosen by Tourism Flanders in the theme year "Landscapes," for its focus on the discovery of the landscape, which to this day bears traces of World War I.

Route

The Belgian Front Memorial Trail will offer participants the opportunity to explore the historic front line of World War I while enjoying a challenging trail run through the picturesque landscape of the Westhoek.

The course takes participants past memorable war memorials, cemeteries and historic sites, giving them a deeper understanding of the events that shaped this region. It also allows supporters to discover the various tourist sites while cheering on their loved ones along the trail.

The Long Way

  • Diksmuide with the IJzer Tower
  • Newport with monuments of WWI

Additional info:

  • 10 supply stations
  • Medical certificate required
  • Course difficulty: low.
  • Required equipment: backpack, drinking cup, headlamp, solid food, clothing for different weather conditions, cell phone, water reserve, survival blanket, jacket and whistle.
Half Marathon
